about

I had this idea when I was younger that smart women can only end up with equally smart emotionally unavailable assholes (I blame Pride and Prejudice. I love you Jane Austen, but you did me dirty with that one). I also blame Sherlock and just about every romcom from the early 2000s. This song is my refutation of that

lyrics

Up late again on my starter phone
Learning what it’s like to never be alone
I found someone just like me
Smart and mean when he wants to be
I can argue with him all night long
I can’t sleep until I prove him wrong
And baby thats the kind of high
That I came back to every night

It’s a game of give and take
Fun until my heart starts breaking
It’s a game that never lasts
We pose like diamonds
’Til we break like glass

I hate his sharpness and his lies
But my friends say that feeling’s butterflies
Wanna be strong so I hold it in
With my feelings bottled up like him
And when he shows me where he bleeds
I laugh at him like he laughed at me
An amateur manipulator
They say I’ll hate him first and love him later

It’s a game of give and take
Fun until my heart starts breaking
It’s a game that never lasts
We pose like diamonds
’Til we break like glass

And I won’t say it’s easy
Waiting for the love you know you need
But when this one says he’s only teasing
I believe him
And I can see it

All the years I fought with him
Thinking it’d turn to devotion
It’s a game of hot and cold
We pose like diamonds
But it gets so old
